During the season time, the Kedarnath route is heavily crowded. If you will book a personal taxi, it would cost you a little expensive, as the taxi price is Rs 4000/- per day inclusive of petrol, taxes and the food charge of the driver. In comparison, Taking the bus would be one of the best and most affordable public transport options but ensure to reach Haridwar by at least 3 or 4’O clock morning. There are mainly 3 bus operators on the route i.e. GMOU (Garhwal Motor Union Ltd.), Himgiri Express, and TGMOC (Tehri Garhwal Motor Owners Corporation).

Where to get Buses from Haridwar to Kedarnath

Haridwar to Kedarnath’s distance by road is around 239 km. You will get buses on the roadside near Haridwar railway station (200 Meters walk-in distance), the opposite side of the main bus station. You don’t need to go inside the main bus station. All buses from Haridwar to Kedarnath stand on the roadside just outside of the main bus station.

Bus and sharing taxis, both are public transport to reach Kedarnath. Sharing a taxi will charge 1000 to 1200 Rs. per seat in peak season whereas the bus will charge Rs. 700 to 1000/- per seat. But a taxi will be a more convenient option as you can take a stoppage for sightseeing in Devprayag and Rudraprayag, whereas on the bus you will be traveling with 40 other travelers.

What if you fail to get direct buses from Haridwar to Kedarnath

Few direct buses are operating on this route and during the peak Yatra season, it could be hard to get a direct bus so if you fail to book a seat then, first of all, take any available bus to Guptkashi (16 KM from Gaurikund). Many buses are running to Guptkashi. Remember, it will take 7 to 8 Hrs. to reach Guptkashi so better leave early. Now you can take shared taxis or buses from Guptkashi to Gaurikund or if you don’t want to rush for the buses and 16 KM of a further trek, you can choose the helicopter service direct from Guptkashi to reach Kedarnath.

Last Motor Stop to reach Kedarnath

Gaurikund is the last motor station but personal vehicles (Either Four-wheeler or two-wheeler) are not allowed beyond Sonprayag. There is a huge parking area in Sonprayag where you have to park your vehicle and after that take sharing cabs to reach Gaurikund. Sonprayag is at 4 Km from Gaurikund. Then you can start your journey from Gauri Kund to Kedarnath.

Note – In this route, traveling at night is not allowed so the road from Rishikesh to Gaurikund remains closed from 08:00 PM to 04:00 AM.

Road Condition from Haridwar to Kedarnath –

The road journey is going to be memorable, as the bus will drive through the curvy road, parallel to Alaknanda /Mandakini Rivers. En route, you will cross two historical towns one is Devprayag, where the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Alaknanda rivers form “The Ganga” and the other is Rudraprayag, where the confluence of the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers.

The journey from Delhi to Kedarnath –

Haridwar and Rishikesh are the entry point for Kedarnath so first, you have to reach Haridwar / Rishikesh, 220 KM from Delhi.

You can book a direct bus from Delhi to Gaurikund / Sonprayag from the official website here. The bus departs from ISBT Kashmiri Gate Delhi at 9:00 PM and reaches Rishikesh at 4:00 AM, Again the bus starts its journey and reaches Sonprayag at 10:00 AM, and the same bus returns to Delhi at 1:00 PM.

To reach Haridwar/Rishikesh, board the bus from Kashmiri Gate bus station in Delhi and it will take 6 Hrs. to reach your destination.

Both Rishikesh and Haridwar are well connected by railways so you can book a seat on the train as well.

The nearest airport to Haridwar and Rishikesh is Jollygrant Airport, 38 KM from Haridwar, and 20 KM from Rishikesh.
