Gun Hill, Mussoorie-
Gun Hill in Mussoorie, is one of the famous tourist destinations of Mussoorie, It is the second highest peak of Mussoorie after Lal Tibba. It is situated at a height of 400 ft above The Mall road. Tourists can witness 360 views of the Himalayas ranges and other peaks namely Gangotri, Yamunotri, Chakrata, Tehri Garhwal, Bunderpunch, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Presently there is a water reservoir also. Gun Hill peak is 500 Meters from the roadside and can be reached by taking a ropeway ride, which is operated frequently. But tourists can also cover a path from The Mall to reach Gun Hill Point on foot.
History of Gun Hill Point –
Going back in history to find the answer to why its name is Gun Hill? you will find an interesting answer – in the time of pre-independence. A canon (Big Gun) was fired from the place at a fixed time every afternoon. So that the residents of the town would know that it is noon and adjust their watches accordingly.
How to reach Gun Hill –
Gun Hill peak can be reached by taking a Ropeway ride or taking upstairs 500 Meters from Mall Road near Rickshaw Stand. Ropeway Ride will charge Rs. 125 for a round trip and take 5 mins. It is 35 Km from Dehradun. First to reach Mussoorie, one can take public transport. i.e. Bus from Dehradun Hill Bus station near Dehradun Railway station. The nearest Railway station to Gun Hill is Dehradun Railway Station (36 Km) and the nearest airport is Jollygrant airport Dehradun ( 60 Km).
Gun Hill from Mall Rd Mussoorie –
There’s no public transport to Gun Hill, you have to visit by yourself, you can take a walk there but the distance is 2 km from Mall Road and it will take you 30-40 minutes to reach there. But if you are hiring a cab, you saved 20 minutes, or you can take rental scooters for 500/- rupees from euttranchal.
Things to do in Gun Hill Point –
Sightseeing –
Being the second highest point of Mussoorie, it is a favorite destination for tourists to witness the stunning view of Himalayas peaks and other native peaks. Binoculars are available on a paid basis to view the locations.
The view and fresh air give utter peace and calmness to the mind.
The edgy slides of the mountain are so scary, that sometimes you feel that land is sliding under your feet.
Ropeway –
There’s also a ropeway for tourists, you will pay 125/- rupees for the ride. The Doon Valley’s view from the cable car (ropeway) is so beautiful.
The ropeway’s time is different for months:
For December and January, the ropeway is open from 10 am to 6 pm.
Between May, June, July, and October are 8 am to 10 pm.
During August and September or November and April is 10 am to 7 pm.
Trekking-
Not a specific trek, but from the main road you can walk up to the hill. A short trek isn’t difficult at all, if you are physically fit then this is not a challenging task for you. Even, Kids can do it easily.
Tiny Eateries and game stalls –
Some rustic restaurants will offer you great tea, hot maggie, and some snacks. There are games for adults & kids too like balloon shooting, bow/arrow, etc, and games for kids. Merry-go-round is also for kids.
Best time to visit –
March and June are the best months, between 4:00 pm to 6:00 or 7:00 pm for sky-view and sunset.
But the timing for tourists is from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM throughout the year.
Note: Gun Hill is the snow point in Mussoorie.
